Kent Wildlife Trust are pioneers of rewilding & conservation grazing scenes. Carefully selected breeds of livestock roam and graze on nature reserves; by their natural food choices, their general lifestyle and behaviour on the nature reserves, they act as architects of the landscape, creating and restoring habitats in which native bidiversity can thrive. I’ve been a Volunteer Livestock Checker for Kent Wildlife Trust for 1½ years. It’s fun and educational catching-up with the animals each week, as they go about their lives on reserves. The breeds are old and hardy, impressive and entertaining additions to the landscape. Each with their unique character to discover, it’s genuinely a joy to hang out with them. KWT livestock must also be the best looked-after in the country - every animal on every reserve is checked to be present and well every day, with any limps or health problems reproted and treated quickly. So, each photo of conservation livestock is supported by my own significant voluntary contribution to conservation (as with all my nature photography), and my direct support of their welfare. I hope to share their great work, and joy of their great characters, and bring-up their proile as doing great work for biodiversity; and encourage more people to become volunteer ivestock checkers for KWT or elsewhere. GALLERY COMING SOON! - Kent Wildlife Trust’s Conservation Livestock Scotland Nature Gallery I live Surrounded by Scotland’s Great Spectacles of nature! Working full-time, as an RSPB volunteer in NE Scotland, I’m unpaid, but rich in nature expereinces to discover, and gladly share. I’m based at RSPB’s Loch of Strathbeg Nature Reserve, working within a small team, managing the reserve alongside a few others including the impressive, towering sea cliffs of Troupe Head and Fowlsheugh. Work is varied and busy 5 days-a-week, but in my evenings and weekends I endeavour to explore and share the captivating local nature - from Strathbeg’s locals, whether birds, badgers, garden bugs or the plentiful local seals; to great seasonal nature spectacles with huge colonies of breeding seabirds gracing the sea cliffs in summer; and thousands of geese and swans roosting on the the loch through winter. With stunning scenery and flora too, I hope to do justice to the beautiful nature of Scotland, seen as only a local can! Kent Nature Gallery From my roots growing up in Kent, followed by a life that’s taken me far beyond to some incredible places and experiences of the natural world - Kent’s brilliant nature still never fails to amaze and captivate me! I’ve just spent 2 years devoting my time to exploring and getting to know my local nature in Kent. Alongside my own outings, I volunteered for Kent Wildlife Trust 2 days-a-week to repay nature for my great experiences, but I got so much more in return - from enjoyable times on weekly group-task days with other volunteers and KWT staff; to happening-upon great nature moments and great scenery whilst out alone checking-on KWT’s conservation livestock; to feeling simple pride to be helping the nature I love here. I gained great extra insight into Kent’s nature through my varied experiences - its successes, struggles and sensitivities alongside us, which I hope to share here along with my photography. I also hope to inspire more people to volunteer at their local nature reserve, to get involved helping, but mostly, discovering and being captivated by nature that surrounds us, for the good of its future!
